Breaking the Stigma Around Homeless People
Throughout my campaign, one thing I learned is how much stigma there is around homeless people. Before visiting the VMC and speaking to people who work with issue every day, I never realized how often we hear stereotypes without even thinking about it. One thing that I wish I did was question these stereotypes sooner, because some of them are just flat-out wrong, A lot of people assume that a person ends up homeless because they are lazy or addicted to drugs, but that is not always the case. Things like expensive medical bills, losing a job, family issues, or expensive rent can force people into situations that they can't recover from. Many veterans also end up homeless due to complications with PTSD and other mental illnesses. Although some people do end up homeless because of bad decisions they made in life, there are so many other reasons as well.
